REMEMBER WHEN…..
Maisie Day Benefit Auction Information
Remember when a first class postage stamp was .06 cents, the hourly minimum
wage was $1.60, the Beatles broke up and the Kansas City Chiefs won the
Super Bowl. What year you might ask….1970. One thing that has
stayed the same over all the years is Maisie DeVore’s determination to bring
a pool to her small town. In 1970 Maisie began collecting aluminum
cans to build a pool in Eskridge. Maisie’s dream came true July 14,
2001.
Prior to July 14 the people of Eskridge had to drive five miles to Lake
Wabaunsee to swim or to drive to one of the surrounding towns to swim in a
pool. Many times as people were driving to nearby cities they would
see Maisie out picking up cans along the road to someday fund a swimming
pool. After many years of hard work some of the ladies in the community became involved and they would host rummage sales and recently at
Christmas many area homeowners would decorate for the holiday season and
community members would tour the beautiful homes and all donations would go
toward Maisie’s pool.
After the pool opened Maisie’s work didn’t stop. She was nominated
and received one of the Kansas Jefferson Awards and then was selected to
receive a National Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis award. The awards are
given to people that have gone the extra mile to complete extraordinary
tasks in their community. Maisie definitely did that!
As you can see Maisie is truly an amazing person, she continues her
aluminum can regiment, but the funds collected from the aluminum can sales
don’t keep the pool afloat. Saturday, July 16th the DeVore Community
Swimming Pool Association is inviting you and all your friends to spend the
day in Eskridge. The day will begin with a free swim at Maisie’s Pool
from 1 to 5pm. After swimming the celebration will continue at the
Catholic Parish hall with a Sloppy Jo dinner beginning at 5:30 pm and a
benefit auction for the pool will start at 6:30pm. Area businesses and
individuals have donated many items. In order to keep Maisie’s dream a
reality, funds must be raised, so please bring your checkbook/cash, have
your arm ready to “bid em up” and have a great time in Eskridge on July
16th.
